From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Parliament approved the direct popular election of Israel’s prime minister. Supporters called it a major reform of the country’s political system. The change, effective in 1996, is not expected to significantly alter the present deal-making needed to give the prime minister a majority in Parliament. The bill passed 55 to 32 in a vote that crossed party lines and overcame objections by Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir.
