San Francisco Giant left-hander Trevor Wilson will be operated on today for a benign tumor on a rib but could be pitching again as soon as three weeks.

“This is a routine surgical procedure,” Giant physician Will Straw said.

Nolan Ryan made 86 pitches and gave up two runs in 4 2/3 innings in his third appearance of the spring as the Texas Rangers beat the Detroit Tigers, 8-3. Ryan gave up two hits, struck out four and walked five. . . . The New York Yankees cut Alvaro Espinoza, placing the shortstop on waivers. General Manager Gene Michael said Espinoza became expendable because the team decided to use Mike Gallego at shortstop.
