Wang Renzhong; Confidant of Chinese Leader

Wang Renzhong, 75, a member of the Communist Party’s Central Committee and confidant of senior leader Deng Xiaoping. Wang was named vice premier in December, 1978, and elected to the party’s Central Committee two years later. He headed an investigation of former party General Secretary Zhao Ziyang, who was purged and placed under house arrest after the Chinese army crushed Beijing’s student democracy movement three years ago. His report last year, which said he could find no evidence that Zhao supported the movement that split the party, is still unresolved. On Monday in Beijing of a heart attack.
