Hosea Williams Enters Treatment Center
Veteran civil rights activist Hosea Williams left jail with a judge’s permission Friday to enter an alcohol treatment center as part of his sentence for a hit-and-run accident.
Williams, 66, completed his 30-day jail term recently, but stayed in jail because Superior Court Judge Robert Mallis had said he could not leave until he was ready to begin the treatment.
He was sentenced for three misdemeanor traffic violations, including leaving the scene of an accident and following too closely. The sentence also included 60 days in an alcohol treatment center and two years probation.
Williams, who marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s, rammed a car last July 19, offered the injured man cash and drove off before police arrived.
