Brazil Environment Officials Fired
Brazil’s president on Saturday fired the country’s two top environmental officials, who were locked in a feud over Amazon deforestation, saying he wanted unity in his administration on environmental matters.
Environment Secretary Jose Lutzenberger, an internationally known ecologist and a major figure in Brazil’s environmental movement for 20 years, was fired after alleging widespread corruption in Brazil’s environmental protection agency.
Eduardo Martins, president of the environmental protection agency, was also fired, said a statement from President Fernando Collor de Mello’s office. No replacement for Martins was named. Lutzenberger was replaced temporarily by the education minister, Jose Goldemberg.
