From Times Staff and Wire Reports

In the first general elections since a military coup a year ago, pro-army parties captured more than half the seats in Parliament’s lower house, according to unofficial tallies. The election was the first since the Feb. 23, 1991, bloodless military takeover that overthrew Prime Minister Chatchai Choonhavan. Early tabulations indicated that three parties with close ties to the ruling junta--the Chart Thai, Samakki Tham and Social Action--captured 190 of 360 seats in the lower house, or 53%. Final results are not expected to be known until today.
