Peace Talks Start With Somalia Chiefs
An international team began talks with clan warlords Monday on implementing a U.N.-brokered cease-fire in Somalia’s capital.
The team, headed by Robert Gallagher of Canada, includes representatives from the Organization of African Unity, the Islamic Conference, the Arab League and non-governmental aid organizations.
A civil war for control of the capital, Mogadishu, has killed or wounded more than 30,000 people since it erupted in November, the United Nations says. Most of the victims have been women and children.
The fighting has also hampered the distribution of the meager relief a handful of international humanitarian organizations has delivered to Mogadishu.
