From Times Staff and Wire Reports

City College of New York named a retired Yale professor to take over its Black Studies Department from Leonard Jeffries, who had been accused of making anti-Semitic and anti-white statements. Dr. Edmund Gordon was named chairman, effective July 1, said college President Bernard Harleston. Jeffries first came under fire last July when he told an audience at a black arts festival in Albany, N.Y., that Jews and mob-connected Italians conspired to make movies denigrating blacks. In January, a former student said Jeffries referred to Jews as dogs in a 1989 class.
