Male Pursuers

I had to read it twice before I believed it. In the compassionate words of Public Defender H. Dean Steward (“Man Convicted of Harassing Witt,” March 13): “Obviously Harry Veltman really loved this woman and his love, I think, turned into an obsession. Now he’s paying the price for it.”

Let’s get it straight, please! Whatever definitions or behaviors can be ascribed to “love,” they do not include those of Veltman in his harassment of Katarina Witt--or those of the murderer of Rebecca Schaeffer or the attacker of Teresa Saldana or those of any other man who relentlessly pursues a woman and tries to force his unwanted presence upon her! This is not love. In fact, in lieu of a more psychological definition, it is extreme egocentrism.
