CYPRESS : Council Scraps Trip in Austerity Move

Share

The City Council, citing possible budget problems, this week canceled a $4,000 trip to Lake Tahoe for a Leadership Team Workshop.

Although the council’s $900 deposit was forfeited by the action, council members said they would rather lose that amount now instead of $4,000 later in a tight budget year.

“The concept is wonderful,” Councilwoman Gail H. Kerry said of the League of California Cities meeting, “but the timing is not right.”

The council originally approved the expenditure for the conference last September. At the time, the city’s budget was in better shape, Councilwoman Joyce C. Nicholson said.

With potential cutbacks looming, the council couldn’t justify the expense and on Monday night unanimously approved pulling out.

The entire council and City Manager Darrell Essex were authorized to attend at a cost of $4,000 plus transportation. In order to reserve space, a $150 non-refundable deposit was sent in for each person attending. The three-day conference is designed to teach cooperation and mediation skills, among other subjects.
