The wife of ousted Panamanian leader Manuel A. Noriega has been arrested for shoplifting, police said Tuesday.

Felicidad Noriega, who attended her husband’s drug trial Tuesday, dismissed the incident as being blown out of proportion and refused to discuss it in detail.

“There was nothing,” Mrs. Noriega said. “It’s just rumors.”

Mrs. Noriega, 46, was arrested Friday at a department store and charged with grand theft, Metro Dade Police spokesman Patrick Brickman said. Security officers accused her and a friend of taking buttons valued at $305 off clothing at the store in Dadeland Mall, south of Miami. The grand theft charge stemmed from damage to the clothing, which was valued at $1,200. Her friend faces the same charges, Brickman said.

Mrs. Noriega was booked and later released on $1,500 bond. Arraignment will be held within two weeks, the spokesman said.
