Agassi, McEnroe Like U.S. Chances Against Czechoslovakia in Davis Cup
So, Petr Korda, how does a 5-0 United States Davis Cup victory over Czechoslovakia sound?
“It is going to be very difficult,” Korda said.
On the morning before today’s two singles matches that open the U.S.-Czech quarterfinal Davis Cup meeting, both Andre Agassi and John McEnroe said 5-0 is not out of the question.
But Korda, who plays 14th-ranked Agassi in the second singles match, wasn’t too happy with the predictions after Thursday’s draw at the Sonesta Sanibel Harbor Resort.
“I think this match is going to be very complicated,” said Korda, ranked 10th in the world. “I think the pressure is going to be on (Agassi’s) shoulders, not mine. They expect to beat us 5-love. If they want to beat us 5-love, yes, it is going to be very difficult.”
No. 4 Pete Sampras plays No. 12 Karel Novacek in the first singles match. In Saturday’s doubles, Rick Leach and John McEnroe are scheduled to play the team of Korda and Cyril Suk.
“I’m confident of our chances,” McEnroe said. “Let’s just say I feel good about it. Abilitywise, we’re at the top of every (Davis Cup) team I’ve been with. I feel like we can win, 5-0.”
