NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Madigan Examined in S&L; Investigation

Agriculture Secretary Edward R. Madigan is under investigation by federal officials about his role as a director for a failed Illinois S&L;, the New York Times reported. The inquiry is focusing on whether Madigan and other officers of Olympic Federal Savings Assn. of Berwyn, Ill., were negligent in their management. The Times said the investigation may determine whether to bring a lawsuit against the directors to make up for taxpayer losses or refer the matter to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.
