PARIS — Civil Service Minister Jean-Pierre Soisson quit the Cabinet on Saturday, protesting suggestions by Socialist Prime Minister Edith Cresson that he gained a regional council presidency by colluding with the far-right National Front.
The controversy marked a new setback for the Socialist government, which last weekend suffered its worst-ever election loss by gaining only 18% of support in voting for the councils.
The events have placed Cresson’s job in peril. Some speculate that a Cabinet shake-up could come this week.
