Lancaster Doctor Surrenders License

A Lancaster doctor accused by state medical investigators of being mentally incompetent to treat patients has surrendered his medical license.

State officials said Jhong Dae Park, an obstetrician-gynecologist, was incoherent and appeared disheveled on several occasions in 1990 while on duty at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center.

He once failed to respond to a hospital page to deliver a baby, forcing other personnel to deliver the baby, officials said, and during uterine surgery on one patient he began to sew up her abdomen before suturing shut her uterus.

Officials said a neurologist who examined Park concluded that he had an irreversible dementia disease caused by diabetes and hypertension. The neurologist said Park, whose IQ was measured at 70, should retire.

Park is eligible to reapply for his license in one year, but will have to pass a battery of tests on his mental and physical fitness, officials said.
