NATION IN BRIEF : VIRGINIA : Infertility Doctor Denied New Trial
Infertility doctor Cecil Jacobson, convicted of lying to patients while using his own sperm for artificial insemination, lost a bid for a new trial in Alexandria, Va. Jacobson, 55, was convicted of 52 counts of fraud and perjury. He faces up to 280 years in prison. In denying defense motions for a new trial and to throw out the convictions, U.S. District Judge James Cacheris rejected arguments that the government did not adequately prove the fraud charges. Prosecutors say Jacobson may have fathered as many as 75 children by his patients.
