Jim Courier regained the men’s No. 1 world ranking when Stefan Edberg was beaten in the semifinals of the Japan Open Saturday at Tokyo.

Richard Krajicek had 12 aces in beating the former No. 1 from Sweden, 6-3, 7-5.

Courier was to play Michael Chang later Saturday, but the outcome would have no bearing on his new ranking, according to ATP officials.

In Friday’s quarterfinals, Edberg, seeded No. 1, beat seventh-seeded Brad Gilbert, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3; Courier, seeded No. 2, beat No. 8 Amos Mansdorf of Israel, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4; No. 6 Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands upset third-seeded Michael Stich of Germany, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and Chang, seeded fourth, beat unseeded Australia’s Todd Woodbridge, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0.

Ivan Lendl, once a semifinalist in almost every tournament he played, now can’t get past the quarterfinals.

No. 2-seeded Lendl, who has yet to reach a semifinal in eight tournaments this year, lost, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to Alberto Mancini in the quarterfinals of the Conde de Godo clay-court event at Barcelona, Spain.

Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabatini were barely challenged in quarterfinal matches of a $350,000 clay-court event at Amelia Island, Fla.

Graf, seeded No. 1, and Sabatini, the defending champion, stayed on course to meet in the final for the third time in four years.

Graf beat No. 7 Leila Meskhi, 6-0, 6-2, and will next play Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. Sabatini defeated No. 5 Jana Novotna 6-2, 6-1, and will next play Conchita Martinez.
