THE REAL JAPAN?

Share

I found Rauch’s article fascinating and enlightening. However, I am still troubled by Japan’s treatment of women.

Comparing women and men to lions and lambs seems inconsistent. It is not unfair that lions eat zebras while lambs do not. Lambs are not capable of hunting down zebras, and they have no need for zebra flesh. On the other hand, women are capable of being prime ministers, governors and managing editors and will do so when given the opportunity. The idea that men and women must always fall into designated roles is troublesome.

I am sure there are roles best suited for men. I have no problem with people who believe that women should not work as bouncers at nightclubs. Most women would not make good bouncers. Perhaps that’s truly the role of men.

I don’t object to Japanese women who are truly content to be “chirpy-cute tea servers.” But others should have the liberty to assume the roles that bring them happiness.
