Debate Over Death Penalty
Ever since I was a little girl--some 40 years ago--the weeks leading up to a state execution invariably have left me feeling anxious and sad. That a society of generally good and decent people should support--demand--ritualistic state killings for the purpose of exacting revenge is chilling and self-defeating, for I believe we sacrifice a little bit of our common humanity every time we indulge such blood lust.
