Retraction Demanded by Shelter

Attorneys for Father Joe Carroll, who runs the nationally renowned St. Vincent de Paul homeless shelter in San Diego, have demanded that ABC-TV correct statements made on a recent edition of “Nightline” that suggested the shelter is not open to all homeless people, lawyers said Tuesday.
A letter sent to the network last week demanded the retraction and correction of 32 separate “false or misleading” statements made on the March 23 “Nightline,” according to Michael Thorsnes, attorney for Carroll. The center does not turn away even one homeless person, Thorsnes said.
If the dispute is not resolved, Thorsnes said, it could lead to a lawsuit. Under California law, a complete retraction limits a network’s liability for libel damages.
