SANTA MONICA : Aid for Refugees From Volcanic Eruption Sought

Share

Leaders of a loosely knit coalition sought cash, food, medicine and other supplies Thursday for thousands of Nicaraguans who took refuge in relief camps to escape the ash-spewing Cerro Negro volcano.

“We’re trying to send food--rice, beans, sugar, oatmeal and especially milk for the children,” said Mina Nelson, founder and honorary consul for the nonprofit organization From USA With Love, one of the coalition members.

The coalition, which has collected more than 230,000 pounds of food, clothing and supplies, is seeking at least $20,000 more in cash or product donations. The items will be transported to Nicaragua on U.S. Air Force planes. “We also need money to buy medicine,” Nelson said. “We need blankets and linens, too.”
