High School JROTC

Share

Thank you for printing George Grider’s opinion piece about the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) in our schools. It should be noted that, in addition to the $638,557 in educational funds that San Diego Unified is spending on military training this year, the district also subsidizes the following school site facilities for JROTC: 10 classrooms, 10 offices, eight supply rooms, seven weapons storage rooms with intrusion detection devices and six indoor rifle ranges.

A major reason for cuts in education and other human services has been the bankrupting effect of military spending.

It is time for school officials to recognize that their educational mission does not include militarism.

The school board should give the Pentagon its one-year termination notice and make this the last year for JROTC.
