SIMI VALLEY : School Trustee Says He Won’t Run Again
Simi Valley school trustee Ken Ashton, a 21-year veteran of the board, has announced he does not intend to run for reelection in November. “There are other things I want to do,” said Ashton, 60. “It’s time to move on. It’s time to let somebody else take a shot at it.”
Ashton said he and his wife would like to devote more time to volunteer work for their church. The couple are also debating whether to move to Utah to care for their widowed mothers, he said.
Ashton, a financial consultant, was elected to the school board in 1971. He said he decided to run for the board because his children were enrolled in local schools at the time. Ashton said all five of his children graduated from Simi Valley High School.
Ashton said only a sudden crisis situation in the district would make him reconsider his decision. He said he believes he could win a sixth term.
“I’m not afraid of an election,” Ashton said. “I think I’ve done well enough over the years that I would remain on the board.”
