Events Planned to Mark Earth Day

Wednesday is Earth Day and many organizations will be having observances throughout the week. Here is a sampling:

The Wilderness Institute will sponsor an ecology hike, exploring the plants and animals in the Santa Monica Mountains for children ages 4 to 7 and their parents on Sunday at 10 a.m. Call (818) 991-7327.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, in honor of Earth Day, the opening of the Ralph M. Parsons Insect Zoo and the reopening of the Discovery Center, will host a daylong series of events on Saturday. Families can learn about the environment, visit the new Insect Zoo with more than 25 live insects and take part in the new paleontology dig exhibit at the Discovery Center.

On Sunday, a workshop called “Sharing Nature with Children” will be offered for parents and children from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Reservations are required; call (213) 744-3345. For information call (213) 744-DINO.

On Saturday the Cabrillo Marine Museum will have naturalist-led tours of the Salinas de San Pedro salt marsh, exhibits by environmental groups and agencies, and a spring cleaning of the tide pools and beaches. Call (310) 548-7562.

Moorpark College will have exhibits, booths and other Earth Day activities on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Campus Center. Call (805) 378-1400, Ext. 1753.

Adults and children over age 4 can take part in creating a giant Canyonlands mural at Santa Monica Place on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. in an observance co-sponsored by the Westside Arts Center. Call (310) 395-1443.

ASTRONOMY

UCLA astronomy professor Ben Zuckerman will discuss “The Search for Brown Dwarfs” at the Santa Monica College Planetarium program on Friday at 8 p.m., following the Night Sky Show at 7. For tickets call (310) 452-9214. For information call (310) 452-9223.

“The Hidden Universe” of astronomical objects in the ultraviolet, infrared, X-ray and gamma radiation wavelengths will be the subject of the El Camino College Planetarium program on Friday at 8 p.m. Call (310) 715-3200.
