Gerald Feinberg, 58, a Columbia University professor renowned in the international physics community for his theoretical work in particle and atomic physics. In 1958, he predicted the existence of a second type of neutrino--a prediction later confirmed by three Nobel Prize-winning Columbia scientists. Feinberg headed Columbia’s physics department from 1980 to 1982, and was the author of six books that covered the smallest components of matter and the expanse of the cosmos.
