I became acquainted with Amitai Etzioni’s work 20 years ago while doing graduate work in anthropology. As a systems analyst designing computer systems and trying to understand corporate society, I found some of his work of use. However, he is not addressing the underlying cause of the problems his communitarians seek to correct. Reagan-Bush style capitalism is the cause of the breakdown of the family and community. Nothing is done to encourage a sense of family and community because those are counter to the needs of laissez-faire economics.
