Creighton University said it has settled a lawsuit brought by former basketball player Kevin Ross, who claims the school exploited his athletic talents and failed to educate him.

Gregory Jahn, Creighton’s general counsel, said the school paid Ross $30,000 as part of the settlement, but admits no liability. Jahn said the settlement fee was prudent in light of projected legal costs.

Ross agreed to drop the remaining count of his lawsuit, which charges Creighton with breach of contract, the university said.

A federal appeals court in March upheld a lower court’s dismissal of the lawsuit’s claim that the university was negligent in failing to provide Ross with an education. However, the appeals court ruled that Ross could sue the school for breach of contract.

Ross could barely read after playing for Creighton from 1979 to 1982. After leaving the university, he enrolled in a private elementary school in Chicago.
