COUNTYWIDE : County to Lease Honor Camp Beds

Share

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plan Tuesday that will allow the county to open 216 more beds at its East Mesa jail next month.

The board agreed to raise badly needed funds to operate the medium security facility by leasing 100 beds in the Descanso Honor Camp to the state. The funds will be used to hire the 39 deputy sheriffs, cooks, nurses and other support staff members needed before the jail can be opened.

When the new beds are opened, the 512-bed medium security facility at the jail on Otay Mesa will be completely operational. But 1,500 more beds in the complex’s maximum security jail, completed last October, remain unoccupied because the county lacks the money to staff it.
