A man described by police as “eccentric” vandalized Christianity’s main shrine, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, in Jerusalem’s Old City on Saturday.

Police said they arrested the man and a woman identified as his wife but could not yet identify them. The man is apparently an English-speaking tourist in his 30s, police said.

The man shattered a 150-year-old glass lantern and tore down a life-size silver cross in the church, built on the reputed site of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, witnesses and officials said.

Dozens of tourists and worshipers ran out of the church screaming, a witness said. A tour guide and a bystander chased the man and brought him to police just outside the church.
