SURPRISE WIN: Sgt. Irma Vasquez, above, a 19-year veteran of the Santa Ana Police Department, was shocked to discover she’s been chosen for a special service award by the California Women’s Peace Officers Assn. at its May 19 dinner--she isn’t even a member. Turns out her bosses nominated her. . . . “It’s been a wonderful career, and this is really special,” she says. Vasquez recently gave up her 10-year detective job to become a patrol sergeant.
