Ueberroth and Rebuild L.A.

Share

Peter Ueberroth is not the “perfect” person to undertake the task of rebuilding this city--nobody is (May 3-4).

Ueberroth is minimally one of the most skilled, proven managers in the United States. Predictions of gloom-and-doom traffic were defied when his L.A. Olympic Organizing Committee acted efficiently and skillfully upon organizing the logistics of the Olympics. The whole organization process went so well, many Angelenos would welcome the return of the Olympic Games in the future.

I’m saddened by the almost immediate criticism of Mayor Tom Bradley’s choice of Ueberroth to lead/manage the task of rebuilding our shattered city. This job is not about socioeconomic status, feel for the victims, race, etc. This job is not about politics. It is about management and leadership of both people and money, the exact skills Ueberroth proved to this city that he had back in 1984. Unless Ueberroth has forgotten how to lead and manage, then I would urge his critics to lay off and give him a chance.
