Alabama basketball Coach Wimp Sanderson has decided to resign and will make it official next week, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Sanderson, accused of striking his secretary in March, will announce his resignation Monday after a three-decade-long tenure at Alabama, the Birmingham News said.

Sanderson, 54, met this week with university officials and asked for “some extra time to clear up some things with his staff and family,” said a close friend quoted by the newspaper.

Sanderson is eligible for an annual pension of $75,000.

The secretary, Nancy Watts, filed a federal sex discrimination complaint against Sanderson and the university, which could be a prelude to a lawsuit.

Watts’ attorney said the complaint accuses Sanderson and the university of sex discrimination, alleging that Watts was struck in the right eye during an on-the-job altercation with Sanderson around March 17.
