Chinese Activist Sues Over Alleged Beating
A dissident trade union activist is suing court employees who allegedly beat him and detained him for several hours.
Han Dongfang, who founded the now-banned Beijing Autonomous Workers’ Federation during the 1989 democracy movement, said he was attacked last week after a court appearance to discuss a housing dispute.
The 29-year-old former railway worker is following the example of other Chinese dissidents who recently have begun trying to use the law to fight official persecution. None of the efforts has succeeded, but the lawsuits have embarrassed the Communist government.
