Japanese Car Makers Assail Dumping Charges: Japanese auto companies expressed outrage at Washington’s conclusion that they have “dumped” minivans at artificially low prices in the United States, and vowed to prove the ruling wrong. Both Toyota, Japan’s leading car maker, and Mazda said they would provide evidence that would lead to a reversal of the ruling. If the International Trade Commission finds that the Japanese imports damaged American auto makers, the U.S. Commerce Department will instruct the Customs Service to levy duties on the Japanese minivans. U.S. auto makers hold about 88% of the American minivan market.
