Red Cross Demands Safety in Bosnia
The Red Cross demanded Friday that warring factions in Bosnia-Herzegovina guarantee the safety of its workers after a senior staffer was killed this week outside Bosnia’s capital.
Meanwhile, the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees announced it was considering suspending all aid programs for Bosnia after armed militants hijacked a convoy of 13 relief trucks carrying food and medicine Thursday night. The agency would not say whether the fighters were Serbs or Muslims.
The Red Cross temporarily pulled its team out of Sarajevo, Bosnia’s capital, on Wednesday after the death of Frederic Maurice, the new chief of its Sarajevo mission.
Maurice was killed and two Red Cross workers were wounded when their convoy was shelled in a no man’s land between Serb and Muslim-led fighters. The convoy vehicles were clearly marked with the Red Cross symbol.
