T. Walter Wallbank, 91, a USC professor from 1933 to 1964 best known for his widely recognized textbook “Civilization Past and Present” in which he conceived of an integration of African, Asian and Middle Eastern cultures with those of the West. The golden anniversary of the 1942 text, which has been used by about 3 million students, was recently celebrated with a reissue. Other Wallbank works include “Living World History,” “History and Life” and “India in the New Era,” which received the biennial American Historical Assn. award in 1950. He was a Fulbright professor at Fuad University in Cairo in 1951-52 and received a Rockefeller grant for field work in Africa, Pakistan and India in 1955-56. In Julian, Calif., on May 16.
