Hughes Reassures Missile Workers

Hughes Aircraft Co. said Friday that it intends to keep 2,000 cruise missile jobs in San Diego at least until August, 1993, after buying out General Dynamics’ missile business. But the company won’t make any promises.
And there were no assurances at all for another 2,500 San Diego workers on General Dynamics’ Tomahawk missile assembly line. City leaders fear that the jobs will be moved if the sale goes through as planned.
Hughes issued the statement after a private meeting between top company officials and U.S. Reps. Duncan L. Hunter and Ron Packard. Packard said afterward that top Hughes officials are committed to keeping the jobs in San Diego until a contract for the advanced cruise missile program is completed in August, 1993.
