Minority Candidates

In re: May 24 editorial: “The Times Endorses Filner” . . . So much for your commitment to Latino representation. You--and everyone else--argued last year that the new congressional district in San Diego should enable the minority communities to elect their first representative ever from San Diego County. Now apparently you agree with Steve Peace and other cynics that no credible candidates from the minority communities can win.

You have dismissed “two other (minority) Democrats” as too green and have sent them to school (boards) and City Councils. At least you seem to consider one Hispanic “impressive and articulate.” So he has a 16-percentage-point disadvantage, Latinos have experienced worse odds before. To hell with your candidate and all the self-serving, hypocritical lip service from you to the minority communities. We’ll unite behind Luis Acle. You hypocrites!
