Greg Welch ran away from the field in winning the Mazda/Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon at Mission Viejo. Welch, the 1990 world champion, finished in 1:50:00, 31 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Andrew MacMartin. Carol Montgomery held off former roommate Michellie Jones to win the women’s elite division in 2:02.11. The event consisted of a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer cycle ride and a 10-kilometer run.
