From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Colombia granted diplomatic asylum to former Peruvian President Alan Garcia after he took refuge in one of the country’s embassy buildings in Lima, the Foreign Ministry announced in Bogota. The announcement said that Garcia, an outspoken opponent of Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, had entered the Colombian ambassador’s residence and asked for diplomatic asylum. Garcia, president from 1985 to 1990, has lived underground since Fujimori dissolved Congress and temporarily closed the courts April 5.
