COPENHAGEN : Danish Twist on EC
Voters in tiny Denmark will have a chance to throw a giant monkey wrench into the European Community machinery today when they decide whether to ratify treaties for political and monetary union. Leaders of the 12 EC nations agreed to the treaties at the Dutch town of Maastricht last December.
Ratification by all 12 countries is technically necessary to put the treaties into effect. Buth French President Francois Mitterrand has reportedly told his Cabinet that the 11 others would find a way to go it alone if Denmark votes down the treaties.
Polls in Denmark show the outcome of today’s referendum too close to call. Only Denmark and Ireland--where the Maastricht treaties have become entangled in a dispute over abortion--have scheduled popular referendums.
