Anchorage Times Folding: The newspaper announced that it is closing today after 77 years, the victim of a fierce competitive battle with the Anchorage Daily News. Times Publishing Co. said Sacramento-based McClatchy Newspapers Inc., owner of the Daily News, is acquiring the Times’ press and other equipment. The Daily News said it will publish editorial-page features that had appeared in the Times. “It is always sad to see a newspaper close,” McClatchy Chief Executive Erwin Potts said. “But both newspapers have been losing money in the intense competitive battle in Anchorage. It is clear the Anchorage economy cannot support two profitable newspapers.” The Daily News’ circulation is 60,873. The Times’ was 44,057.
