EARTH PESSIMIST: UCI chemistry professor F. Sherwood Rowland, the renowned ozone expert, is not optimistic about President Bush’s role in the Earth Summit. In this month’s Science magazine, Rowland laments in an editorial: “Observers have rightly judged the U.S. as almost wholly obstructionist” on global concerns. . . . Rowland adds that he hopes the conference will result in Bush realizing he must change his “current commitment to inaction and the status quo.”
