China to Let Dissident Journalist Return
Chinese authorities gave permission Wednesday for dissident journalist Dai Qing to return home from Hong Kong after officials last week barred her from flying to Beijing.
“I am very happy,” said the 51-year-old Dai, China’s best-known journalist, who is scheduled to fly to Beijing on Sunday. She had been in transit last Saturday at Hong Kong airport en route home from the United States.
Dai said Chinese officials may have barred her return because of Beijing’s nervousness over the third anniversary today of the army crackdown on student-led pro-democracy demonstrators.
