A German court jailed an alleged Irish Republican Army guerrilla Thursday for weapons violations but dropped attempted murder charges for lack of evidence.

Gerard Thomas Hanratty, 33, was convicted of illegally possessing two Soviet-made automatic rifles and jailed for 2 1/2 years.

After a trial lasting nearly two years, the Duesseldorf High Court dismissed attempted murder charges arising from bomb attacks on a North Atlantic Treaty Organization base in Moenchengladbach in 1987 and a British army barracks in Duisburg in 1988.

A British extradition request for Hanratty is expected to be decided in July or August.
