FDA Orders Recall of New Antibiotic Drug: Omniflox, sold by Abbott Laboratories, has occasioned reports of severe adverse reactions, including three deaths, the Federal Drug Administration said. Omniflox, whose chemical name is temafloxacin, is one of a new class of broad-spectrum antibiotics used to treat infections of the lower respiratory system, the urinary tract and prostate gland and the skin. The drug was approved by the FDA last January, and Abbott started sales of the drug in mid-February. The recall was ordered after 50 reports of severe reactions, including low blood sugar, especially in elderly patients.
