* Gary W. Sproule has been appointed senior vice president of administration and planning of Unocal Corp.

Sproule, 41, succeeds Claude S. Brinegar, 65, who retired as executive vice president. Brinegar continues as a non-employee member of the board of directors and vice chairman.

Sproule has been vice president of budgets, planning and economics of the Los Angeles oil company since 1988.
