WORLD IN BRIEF : HAITI : U.S. Considers Plan to Send Peacekeepers

Bush Administration officials said they have begun talks on a plan to involve international peacekeeping forces as part of a political settlement restoring the government of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The New York Times reported in today’s editions that the initiative is being discussed with Caribbean and Latin American leaders. As part of the plan, the army would be included in the selection of a new prime minister to serve under Aristide, who was overthrown in a military coup in September, 1991.
