Peril to Hippopotamuses Told in Extended Drought

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
A severe drought in southern Africa is threatening the lives of hundreds of hippopotamuses, authorities said Friday.
About 300 hippos live around the Limpopo, Letaba and Olifants rivers in the northeastern Transvaal, but large sections of the rivers have dried up and grazing land is depleted.
