WALLINGFORD, Conn. — Edmund Laskowski sent a letter to himself so he would be sure to remember what a special day Thursday was.
Wallingford had a once-in-an-eternity day when its ZIP code, 06492, matched the date, 06-4-92.
“It makes you wonder whether there are psychic powers at work here,” said Marshall Gaither, 29, a postal clerk who attended a celebration outside the Wallingford Post Office.
The post office all day offered special stamp cancellations that featured a hand-drawn representation of the Wallingford seal. Laskowski, 75, was the first in line.
Mayor William Dickinson spoke to a crowd of about 50 mail enthusiasts who gathered at noon to mark the occasion.
“It’s an historic day,” he said. “There are many communities in the U.S. that will never have a ZIP Code Day.” He was flanked by solemn postal officials, including one in an eagle costume.
